Scotland Excel achieves WWF's Bronze level pledge for sustainable timber procurement.
One of the world's leading environmental organisations, WWF, is encouraging all local authorities to pledge to improve their procurement policies for timber and paper products.
WWF has introduced Bronze, Silver and Gold level pledges to enable local authorities to benchmark their progress in developing, implementing and practising sustainable timber procurement. Scotland Excel is delighted to announce the achievement of a Bronze award in this programme as a result of the training undertaken by the procurement staff involved in the recent framework for building and timber materials.
All the timber available from this contract is from a legal and sustainable source, with most suppliers able to provide 'Chain of Custody' certification documenting the supply chain route from forest to merchant. This has been verified by the Central Point of Expertise on Timber Procurement (CPET), making Scotland the first country in the UK to implement an agreement of this type.
Using this framework enables local authorities to quickly progress through the Silver and Bronze levels of the timber pledge by ensuring that they only purchase sustainable wood. As well as being aligned to the aims of Scottish Government's Sustainable Procurement Action Plan, it provides a tangible way for local authorities to address their Public Bodies Climate Change Duties which came into effect on 1 January 2011.
Scottish local authorities can influence the way timber is harvested and processed by buying responsibly sourced wood and paper and, as major purchasers of timber, they can influence the wider market. Suppliers to the Scotland Excel framework have indicated that sustainable timber is now likely to make up the majority of the stock they hold for supply to all customers.
