Learning and development
Scotland Excel is recognised as leading the way in learning and development across the public procurement sector. We are committed to supporting procurement capability to further develop the specialist knowledge and skills that exist within local authorities.
Scotland Excel’s training delivery for 2016 offers a range of courses for public procurement staff at all stages of their career, whether starting out or continuing their professional development. Our courses cover a wide variety of topics in procurement, legal, finance, supply chain and materials management.
Improving procurement standards
Learning and development is key driver of procurement reform, and we work in partnership with our colleagues in other Centres of Expertise through the National People and Skills Working Group supported by the Scottish Government.
As a Centre of Expertise, we value professional qualifications and work closely with the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) and Glasgow's Central College to provide a number of routes to CIPS accreditation at each stage of the career ladder.
Working to raise standards across the industry requires that we consider our own professionalism, and that of our staff, as a key priority. Scotland Excel was the first public sector organisation in Scotland to be awarded CIPS Corporate Certification in 2010, and almost all of our procurement staff are CIPS members.
Graduate Trainee Programme
In October 2009, Scotland Excel launched the first national public sector graduate development programme for procurement in Scotland. The programme aims to increase the number of professionally qualified practitioners in the sector while raising the profile of procurement as a major business discipline.
Our first three graduates are currently completing training placements within Scotland Excel and at partner local authorities, and are studying for an MSc in Procurement Management at Strathclyde University.
